Theory and History of Journalism Department

 

Theory and History of Journalism Department was established in 2002.

 

Theory and History of Journalism Department is headed by professor Nataliya I. Zykun.

 

The department includes highly qualified specialists in the field of journalism, among whom:

 

      Horevalov Serhiy Ivanovych – professor, fellow of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine;

      Zykun Natalia Ivanivna – professor, fellow of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine;

      Turyan Oleksandr Volodymyrovych – broadcaster, author of the programmes “Sytuatsia” (“Situation”), “Chornyy Kvadrat” (“Black Square”), “Chorne Kolo” (“Black Circle”), “Rakurs” (“Angle of Approach”), “Pravochyn” (“Legal Action”), “Svidok” (“Witness”), honoured journalist of Ukraine, bestowed with the awards of the International Rating Contest of Mass Media “Zolote pero” (“Golden Pen”) and the International Contest of Programmes on Law-enforcement Issues “Zolotyy Heorhiy” (“Golden George”).

During the educative process the capacities of the production-and-training television studio, radio studio, press centre and newspaper editorial office “Post Scriptum+” are actively used where the students of the Institute of Journalism, whose specialities are “Tele-, radio journalism” and “Print Media”, improve their professional skills. The results of this work are release of the weekly TV program “Studentskyy kvitok” (“Student ID”) and monthly All Ukrainian newspaper “Post Scriptum+”, campus newspaper “Shtopor” (“Cork-screw”).

 

The department provides educational training for 3-year students and practical session for 4-year students, the aim of which is:

 

– study of the work of a newspaper editorial office, television & radio company or ad or PR agency / principles and familiarization with the forms of work in the editorial office, company or agency;

perfection of knowledge on creation of information and analytical genres;

creation of one’s own materials in information and analytical genres;

familiarization with the process of preparation of materials for a newspaper (magazine) or over-the-air programme;

participation in organizational-public events of the editorial office or company;

publication in the press or performance on camera with one’s own materials taking into account specificity of media type.

 

Leading mass media of Ukraine are among main training places.

 

An important part of the department activity is the scientific work. The basic research trends include: integration of Ukraine into the European information space; formation of the information space in Ukraine and abroad: status, development prospects; improvement of communicative action methods; analysis of the historical experience of the Ukrainian and European journalism, its influence on the formation of a national tradition, national idea; introduction of idea promoted in mass media, in social political, economic, cultural life of the Ukrainian state; discourse in the communication systems.

 

The department works on the development of the scientific research topic “Informational processes and society in Ukraine: entering the European and world informational space”, registered in UkrINTEI (¹ 01104003162).

 

The department organized and supervises the following research teams:

 

  1. Photojournalism (the head is prof. S.I. Horevalov).
  2. Psychological peculiarities of journalist professional communication (the head is prof. N.I. Zykun).
  3. Readiness of a journalist to work under extreme conditions (the head is the teacher O.V. Turyan).

 

The teaching staff of the department holds a meeting with leading representatives of the domestic and foreign mass media and other events on a regular basis which contribute to the formation of common values of mankind and professional skills.

 

In the Institute of Journalism there is a pictorial journalism creativity workshop of Ihor Kostin, the press photographer, fellow of the National Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine.
