Department of Germanic Languages
Department of Germanic Languages of Kyiv International University was established in September 1998 and provides teaching of Germanic languages at the Institute of International Relations, Institute of Psychology , Social and Political Sciences, Institute of Law, Departments of Building and Architecture and of Economics.
The head of Department is professor Irina V. Timenko.
The work at topics of practical foreign language courses that are taught at the department of Germanic languages, is aimed at the expansion of world view, the formation of active life position and development of the linguistic competence of students. Foreign languages are taught in accordance with the author's method of Rector of the University Professor Khachatur Vladimirovich Khachaturian, based on authentic materials and modeling real situations, which facilitates the learning of foreign language vocabulary in typical communicative contexts.
During the academic year, special attention is paid to individual tasks performed by students themselves in consultation with the teacher. Students' independent work in foreign language curriculum is defined by course programs, teaching materials, methodological guidelines and objectives.
Education is provided by the teachers, philologists and scholars of the highest qualification. Their scientific achievements are widely used in the educational process and is key to quality training of future specialists in international relations, organizational management, psychology, sociology, political and legal sciences.
Academic programs for foreign languages are developed by practicing teachers in the light of European experience and cover all theoretical and practical aspects of language and allow to master the full scope of professional terminology in a foreign language.
The faculty’s research work is reflected in the articles published in scientific journals, presentations at international and nationwide conferences, creating manuals and textbooks, writing dissertations.
The basis of scientific research work of the faculty is the study of the vital problems of linguistics. The teaching staff work at the scientific-research theme: Cognitive and discourse structures of the Germanic languages in social and cultural space of communication. The members of the teaching staff fruitfully contribute to the annual editions of KIU Collected Research Works, series: Foreign Languages.
The teachers actively participate in programs and workshops that are held in Ukraine and abroad.
Within the framework of cooperation with embassies, missions and international organizations of the countries whose languages are studied, the teachers and students are involved in organizing various activities that promote acquaintance with the mentality, art, music of these countries, but also helps preserve the interest and promotion of foreign languages.
The Department of Germanic Languages supervises scientific student research groups, meetings being held 1-2 times per month:
• English-speaking countries: Great Britain.
• The United States. History and present.
• The United Kingdom: the linguo-cultural aspect.
• Human rights in the UK.
• The culture of conduct and business etiquette.
• The UK and its features.
• Culture and traditions of Great Britain.
• Denmark: historical and cultural aspect.
• Features of socio-economic relations in the 21th century in Britain.
Kyiv International University provides creation and constant improvement of scientific, technical and methodological conditions. The university has a sufficient number of classrooms. Students work in on-premise computer classes.
The Staff of the Department of Germanic languages make extensive use of educational technical aids at each lesson (video and audio recordings, videotapes, films and educational films). The supply of audio and video materials of the Department is constantly updated. Constant improvement of scientific, technical and methodological conditions is ensured. The University is equipped with specialized language laboratories and specialized classrooms for learning foreign languages. Thus, in the 2008–2009 academic year, the department staff in cooperation with the Department of Germanic philology developed 20 television lessons in English to prepare high school students for taking external testing. Now university operates a computer center, which was established on the basis of laboratory equipment, computer classes. All this enables the implementation of linguistic information systems, computer programs, translation and editing programs into the training process.
Members of the department are familiar with the linguistic achievements of world science, which is the result of their active participation in seminars organized by the British Council.
